British Values

At Upton Primary School, British Values and our diverse, multi-cultural society are reflected in all that we do, and our belief that everyone belongs runs through every year group. From the moment children join us in Nursery, we nurture them to grow into safe, caring, responsible and respectful young people who make a difference to their community.

The five British Values are taught in every year group, in every half term, through our subjects, our routines and the way we treat each other:

British Value

What it means for our pupils

Democracy

Everyone can have a say. We listen to different views, take turns, vote and accept the result.

The rule of law

Rules and laws keep us safe and fair. We understand why they matter and what happens when they are broken.

Individual liberty

We can make safe, informed choices and express our views, knowing our rights and how to keep ourselves safe.

Mutual respect

We treat everyone with kindness and fairness, listen to others and value what makes each person unique.

Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

We learn about different faiths, beliefs and cultures, and show respect for those whose beliefs differ from our own.

Children see democracy in action through class votes and our Student Council and they learn how laws are made during Parliament Week each November. In Year 4 they learn where democracy began, in Ancient Greece.

Everyone Belongs

Everyone Belongs is at the heart of our Upton CARES values. From Nursery to Year 4, children learn through our Everyone Belongs themes that every age matters, that everyone should be included, that we all come from different places, that there are no "boy jobs" or "girl jobs", that people believe different things and that all families matter. From Year 5, children learn about the Equality Act 2010 and the nine characteristics that it protects, in an age-appropriate way, through PSHE, RE, English, History and Geography.

Talking about our values

Every Friday is Reflection Friday. Children talk through a real-life situation, thinking about their thoughts, their feelings, how their body feels, what they want to do and what would help. Each week, the Talk at home question on our home learning sheet links to a British Value, so families can carry on the conversation at home. Our British Values and Everyone Belongs posters use the same words in school and at home.
